What is Duplex?

Duplex steel belongs to the group stainless- and acid resistant steel and it has very high strength. It is comparable to steel in the higher strength classes. There are five duplex groups; from lean to hyper. What gives duplex steel its character is the balance between austenitic and ferritic two-phase structures (ratio 50:50). Duplex therefore consists of more chromium than the pure austenitic steel and of lower nickel contents than other nickel-based products. This contributes to the duplex steel's high strength and it gives the steel its stability. It is corrosion resistant and has excellent mechanical properties. Products such as screws, washers, chains, etc. become particularly durable when they are manufactured in duplex steel.

Duplex is available in the following standards:

AFNOR Z 5 CNDU 21.08

AISI/ASTM 318 LN

BS 318 S 13

SS 2377

UNS S 31803

AFNOR = Association française de normalisation

AISI = American Iron and Steel Institute

ASTM = American Society for Testing and Materials

BS = British Standards

SS = Swedish Standard

UNE = Spanish Standards

UNS = Unified Numbering System
